The Best Picnic Spots & Scenic Viewpoints Near Tintern

There's something special about summer in the Wye Valley. Longer days, warm sunshine, and endless opportunities to slow down and enjoy the scenery. Whether you're setting off after breakfast with us or packing up a picnic to enjoy later in the day, some of the region's most beautiful viewpoints are just a short journey from The Royal George.

From dramatic limestone cliffs and historic woodland trails to peaceful lakes and panoramic river views, these are a few of our favourite places to spend a sunny afternoon.

Wintour's Leap

If you're looking for one of the most unforgettable views in the Wye Valley, Wintour's Leap is well worth the walk. Overlooking the Lancaut Peninsula, it's one of our favourite places to catch the sunset, with sweeping views across the valley and the chance to spot peregrine falcons gliding overhead. Steeped in history, the dramatic limestone cliffs are named after Sir John Wintour, who is said to have made a daring escape here during the English Civil War.

Piercefield Park

Just a short drive from Tintern, Piercefield Park is perfect for a leisurely afternoon. Wander through one of Britain's most celebrated historic landscape gardens, where every path leads to another breathtaking viewpoint. Pack a picnic and take your time discovering landmarks like the Alcove, Giant's Cave, Lover's Leap, and the spectacular Eagle's Nest, each offering a different perspective of the River Wye.

Whitestone & Cleddon Falls

For those who love woodland walks, Whitestone is one of our favourite hidden gems. Said to have inspired William Wordsworth, the peaceful trails open up to panoramic views across the valley before leading on to the beautiful Cleddon Falls. After rainfall, the waterfalls are particularly impressive, making this a wonderful escape into nature.

Symonds Yat Rock

No visit to the Wye Valley feels complete without a trip to Symonds Yat Rock. One of the region's most iconic viewpoints, it's the perfect place to enjoy a picnic while taking in spectacular views over the River Wye. If you're lucky, you may even spot birds of prey circling above the forest before exploring the charming villages nearby.

Beechenhurst & Mallards Pike

If you're travelling with family or simply looking for a slower-paced day, Beechenhurst and Mallards Pike are always great choices. Enjoy a relaxed picnic beside the lake, explore peaceful woodland trails, or stop for coffee before wandering through the Forest of Dean. It's an easy day out that everyone can enjoy.
