Birdwatching in the Wye Valley

Birdwatching in the Wye Valley: What to Look Out for Around Tintern

The Wye Valley is a wonderful place to slow down, step outside and reconnect with nature. With the River Wye winding through ancient woodland, riverside meadows and rolling countryside, the landscape around Tintern provides a natural home for an impressive variety of birds.

Whether you are an experienced birdwatcher or simply enjoy spotting wildlife on a country walk, there is plenty to look out for throughout the seasons.

What birds are you most likely to see?

One of the things we love most about living and working in Tintern is how close we are to nature. From the gardens around The Royal George to the woodland paths and riverbanks, there is always something to spot if you take a moment to look and listen.

Robins, blackbirds, wrens, blue tits, great tits, chaffinches and jays are regular visitors, while woodpeckers can often be heard amongst the trees. Look to the skies and you may see buzzards circling above the valley, while the River Wye is home to mallards, herons and swans.

Look out for a flash of blue

One of the most special sightings is the kingfisher. If you are lucky, you may catch a flash of brilliant blue and orange as one darts along the River Wye. Dippers can also be spotted around the faster flowing streams, while the surrounding woodland provides a wonderful habitat for woodpeckers and smaller songbirds.

Exploring the Wye Valley

For a peaceful morning of birdwatching, we love following the riverside paths and sections of the Wye Valley Walk around Tintern. The Old Station is another lovely place to begin, with trails leading through the surrounding countryside.

You do not need to be an expert to enjoy birdwatching here. Take your time, bring your binoculars and listen carefully. Some of the best sightings can happen when you least expect them.

After a morning exploring, return to The Royal George for a leisurely lunch or a well earned drink, and take a little more time to enjoy the landscape that makes this part of the Wye Valley so special.
