How To Spend Summer In Tintern

There's something about Tintern in the summer that is truly magical.

Maybe it's the way the morning mist lifts off the River Wye as the valley wakes up. Maybe it's the fact you can spend an entire day outdoors without ever feeling rushed. Or perhaps it's simply that life slows down here. Whatever it is, summer brings a different energy to the village, and it's the season we look forward to most.

If you're planning a visit this season, here are some of our favourite ways to make the most of summer in Tintern.

A Summer Day In Tintern

Start Slow

There's no reason to rush here.

Open the curtains and start your day gazing from our Heritage Room windows at The Royal George. Breathe in the fresh valley air and enjoy a proper breakfast before heading out. One of the best things about staying in Tintern is that everything feels close enough to discover at your own pace. There isn't an itinerary to tick off, just plenty of places waiting to be explored.

Wander Through Tintern Abbey

You could visit Tintern Abbey at any time of year, but summer feels particularly special.

The ancient stone arches framed by bright green trees, people sitting on the grass with a coffee, the sound of birds echoing through the ruins, it's easy to see why it's one of the most photographed places in Wales.

If you're lucky, you might even catch one of the open-air theatre performances or evening events held inside the abbey during the summer months. Watching the sun set behind the ruins is an experience you'll remember long after you've gone home.

See The Wye Valley From The Water

One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the valley is to leave the footpaths behind altogether.

Hiring a canoe or kayak and drifting down the River Wye offers a completely different perspective. The pace is slower, the scenery feels even more dramatic, and before long you'll find yourself switching off from emails, notifications and everything you've left behind.

Stretch Lunch Into The Afternoon

Summer lunches have a habit of turning into afternoons, and that's exactly how it should be.

Enjoy long lunches and al fresco dining in our Upper Deck Restaurant, order something seasonal, pour another drink and stay a little longer than you planned. There aren't many places where time slows down quite like Tintern, especially as the days get longer into summer.

Discover Local Vineyards

A 2-minute drive from our hotel you'll find Parva Farm Vineyard, one of those places that feels like a hidden secret.

In summer, the vines are full of life and the views across the valley are just as memorable as the wines themselves. Stop by their local Farm Shop and explore their cider, perry and ales, honey, gifts and cards by local artists.

Make Time To Do Absolutely Nothing

This might be our favourite recommendation of all.

Find a quiet spot beside the River Wye, settle into the gardens at The Royal George with a good book, or simply watch paddle boarders drift by. Swap the sound of notifications for birdsong, breathe in the fresh countryside air, and enjoy having nowhere else to be.

That's what summer in Tintern is all about. Not filling every hour with plans, but slowing down, reconnecting with nature, and taking time to recharge.

If we could leave you with one piece of advice, it's this: don't rush home. Stay a little longer, soak up the peaceful surroundings, and let The Royal George be your home away from home for a few summer days.
